Support Within Reach

Support Within Reach (SWR) is a private, non-profit organization, formerly the Itasca Alliance Against Sexual Assault (IAASA) and the Sexual Assault Program of Beltrami, Cass, and Hubbard Counties (SAP). Our merged organization serves Aitkin, Beltrami, Cass, Clearwater, Hubbard and Itasca Counties and we deliver our services through offices located in Grand Rapids, Bemidji, Walker, Park Rapids and Aitkin.

Sexual violence affects all our lives. 1 in 3 girls and 1 in 5 boys will be victimized before they are 18 years old. Support Within Reach has been serving victims and survivors of sexual violence and their families since 1977. One-on-one crisis advocacy response, legal advocacy, medical advocacy, support groups and prevention education are major components of our service. Guided by our mission, we work to enhance the quality of life for those we serve. The term sexual violence includes a number of actions that are carried out in a manner intended to groom, control, intimidate, manipulate, humiliate, harm and silence the victim. Unfortunately, sexual violence comes in many forms, including: sexual assault/rape, incest/child sexual abuse, intimate partner sexual violence, date/acquaintance rape, alcohol/drug facilitated sexual assault, sexual harassment, sex trafficking/sexual exploitation, bullying and stalking.

SWR works to create a society that is free of violence through leadership, action and mentoring that is responsive to the needs of the community we serve. We believe that sexism, racism, homophobia, classism, oppression of people with disabilities, religious oppression and ageism are among the root causes of violence. Through our cooperative work, SWR is committed to challenging practices, policies and institutions which promote systems of oppression.

We develop relationships with collaborating agencies allowing us to understand their role within the system along with their strengths and limitations. As a result, we are better able to assist our clients in navigating complex systems which could otherwise inhibit their understanding and healing. SWR’s collaborative spirit has helped the agency to overcome many hurdles that arise when working with victims of sexual violence. Because our service area is immense, getting the word out about promoting our services can be difficult. There is much to be done to end sexual violence, and the only way to do it is to literally get out in the community and make it happen.
