  • Schools- collaborating with local schools to address the needs of the immigrant community

2023 Year in Review

As we approach the end of another year, we wanted to take a moment to express our sincere gratitude. The support of our donors is the cornerstone of our success, and we are humbled by your generosity. It’s been a year of progress and growth, and we are excited to share with you some highlights from our work in our four focus areas.

Relocation Services: We continue to welcome new families to our community by providing information, resources and welcome baskets. We support families in a variety of ways- helping fill out forms or applications, providing free winter gear, and connecting to English language classes, to name a few.

Schools: We held Spanish Speaking Parent Nights at Morris Area Schools (MAS) and KMS Schools in August. These events help parents navigate the US school system. This year was also the inaugural year of the Conexiones scholarship. This opportunity will support a graduating senior who has shown a passion for bilingualism and helping their community and will be available in Stevens and Swift counties for years to come. In addition, Conexiones collaborated with KMS Elementary Food Service and the Statewide Health Improvement Partnership to organize a Mexican food taste testing event where students had the opportunity to experience the flavors of Mexican cuisine.

Health Services: Conexiones continues to collaborate with the Latina Women Support Group in Stevens County to organize presentations for the group, covering topics such as women’s health, wellbeing, healthy eating, and winter weather. We held our first Health & Safety Day in Swift County, in collaboration with Countryside Public Health, Murdock First Responders, and the Murdock Fire Department. We modeled this event after previous winter and summer safety days held in Morris, and after receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback from attendees in both counties, we plan to continue hosting both summer and winter-themed safety days regularly, including one in Stevens County this fall.

Community Activities: We offered summer event series in both Stevens and Swift counties. Activities included a community walk, a Latina-led painting class, Aztec dance performances, free swim at Pillsbury Pool, and a community potluck. We also hosted a community snowshoeing event, latin dance lessons, and a bus trip. Our largest event, Conexiones Day, was once again a huge success. At this year’s annual event, we added new activities and entertainment options, and reached an estimated 500 community members.

Thank you again for your support and for taking the time to read about the highlights of this past year. We are already making plans for next year's events and with your support, we look forward to continuing to make a positive impact within our community.

Sincerely,

Autumn Macias, Executive Director

Alma Contreras, Assistant Director
